A 30th Anniversary Interview
with Craig Klaas, President, and Steve Schou, CEO
Q: Craig, how did you decide to go into the financial business?
A: After graduating from the University of Illinois with a BA in Finance, my goal was to start an independently owned financial services business of my own and to develop a team of quality people to help serve our clientele.
Q: Steve, will you describe the services that you provide?
A: We assist clients in the development of financial strategies for retirees and those nearing retirement, and help minimize income and estate taxes on retirement accounts. We provide a full range of investment services through our fee-only or commission-based investing.
Q: Craig, what are the biggest financial mistakes that you see people make which you could help them avoid?
A: The biggest problem is not being well diversified and, secondly, not having a written financial plan. We know that we can help people address their mistakes by using two simple keys to success with financial planning: key one is diversification. There is no ONE best investment
strategy, and, secondly, by developing a written financial plan.
Q: Steve, I know that Klaas is a Registered Investment Advisory firm. What is the benefit to clients and potential clients?
A: Our advisory service gives us the ability to focus on each person’s financial goals, design strategies to help address those objectives, and then help with the appropriate investment vehicles.
Q: Craig, what are the key strategies and principles your company has used to become successful?
A: Developing close relationships with our clients is key to our success, so that we know them individually. Then we are able to provide investment strategies uniquely designed to help address their goals.
Q: Steve, what is your business philosophy toward the treatment of clients, vendors, and employees?
A: My personal philosophy and that of our office is to be guided by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Q. Craig, what distinguishes your business from others in the same field?
A: Teamwork and relationships. Our office succeeds because we have an excellent team of professionals who care about the people with whom we work and serve.
